INSPECTORS examining the actions of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in relation to the Nottingham stabbings will publish their report in March it has been confirmed.

On 30 January 2024, the Attorney General commissioned His Majesty’s Crown Prosecution Inspectorate (HMCPSI) to carry out a rapid, independent inspection of the actions of the CPS in the Valdo Calocane case following concerns raised by the victims’ families.

Today inspectors confirmed they will publish their report on Monday 25 March 2024.

HMCPSI’s Deputy Chief Inspector, Anthony Rogers, said:

“This was a horrific and tragic case and I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to all of Valdo Calocane’s victims, and their families and friends, whose lives have been torn apart by his brutal and senseless attacks.

“It is now our job to diligently and objectively review the CPS’s actions and as part of that, we will be writing to the bereaved families so that we can understand their concerns.”

Calocone pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility and three counts of attempted murder. He was ordered to be detained in a high-security hospital following his sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court on 25 January 2024 after killing three people and injuring several others.

HMCPSI’s inspection will look at all aspects that determined the CPS’s decision to accept Valdo Calocane’s guilty pleas to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility and whether the CPS met its duties to consult with families ahead of accepting pleas

Inspectors will review case files and decision-making, as well as speak with CPS prosecutors and other parties who worked on the case.
