Online event: Towards effective practice with black, Asian and minority ethnic people on probation (2021) (YouTube link, 614 kB)

This is a recording of an online event exploring effective practice identified during our thematic inspection of race equality in probation: the experiences of black, Asian and minority ethnic probation service users and staff (2021).

HM Inspectorate of Probation’s race equality in probation video (YouTube link, 570 kB) provides an overview of the report findings.

Event contents: Chief Inspector of Probation Justin Russell, HM Inspectors Avtar Singh and Trevor Worsfold, and Muslim women in prison project coordinator Sofia Buncy provide an overview of the thematic inspection, identify markers of effective practice with individual service users and offer an overview of four case studies. These look specifically at getting the conversation started, the importance of developing cultural understanding, respecting and understanding differences and building a trusting relationship. They discuss the AIR network’s mentoring services and Sofia Buncy provides an overview of the ‘Muslim women in prison project: A culturally informed grass roots model’.

Finally, the event identifies what works well for staff and provides an overview of a case study regarding inclusive practice with staff and support in the workplace.
